Google’s January 2017 Mobile Update

I think we all hate pop‑ups. I know I do. Google’s finally made an algorithm update to address the issue on mobile, specifically. It’s called the Intrusive and Interstitial Mobile Update. It’s coming in January of 2017, so it’s right around the corner.

Now, we got advance warning of this update because Google wanted people to have time to update their websites before they completely killed their mobile traffic, but that’s what’s going to happen. If your mobile site has a pop‑up and it interrupts somebody’s experience, Google will very strongly depress your website’s results in mobile.

We absolutely have told everybody to kill your pop‑up ads in mobile. Make sure that they’re not popping on your mobile site, or your traffic’s going to dive‑bomb. To put into perspective how serious this is, for most of our customers, mobile is 50 to 60 percent of their traffic volume. So, it could be a massive hit if you miss this update.

Thanks so much for reading. If you’d like help removing your pop‑ups, maybe coming up with a better strategy that would be more effective and less annoying, give me a call. I’d love to chat with you about it.
